Text to Speech Software
These two apps are great assistive tools for students with trouble reading or learning disabilities, or to help students practice taking notes while listening rather than reading. Audio Technology for iPad, Smartphone and Computer |
This app not only allows students and teachers to create and share podcasts including their own voices as well as sound effects and music, but also provides access to other shared podcasts which are organized into categories such as: Art, technology, culture, news, sports, music, hobbies, audiobooks, etc. The app also allows users to link to RSS feed and upload files. |
Classroom Applications:
1) Have students work in partners to research an artist or famous person and then create interview questions based on important information found. Students then record the interview; one partner acting as a famous artist or significant historical person, and the other as the interviewer. As an extension, have students share their podcast online with classmates and have class listen to each and take notes, practicing their auditory note taking skills.
2) Use “Audiobooks” as a support tool for students who need to practice reading skills: having them listen and read simultaneously for deeper level of understanding.

The app is very basic, simple and straightforward to use; just upload the photo, then hit record and starting talking. Immediate playback and re-recording options available. Classroom applications: 1) Have students upload a self portrait (photograph of themselves) and then record a short broadcast introducing themselves. 2) Upload a famous painting or image and have students demonstrate knowledge of art pedagogy by describing the work, critiquing it, or providing information on techniques used to create the work. 3) Provide students with an image of a graph or several graphs and have them record and auditory explanation of the behaviour of the line or the transitions that happened to change the first graph into the second. |
Soundtrap
Available for ipad, smartphone and computer, this app is versatile and mobile. Soundtrap promotes collaboration, allowing audio segments to be recorded separately, then uploaded to a common document and pieced together and layered to create a composite audio work. The app also allows users to text and video chat making communication between participants easy. Educators can also upload and share lessons which students can then download and edit or add to, and for students working in various locations throughout the school, app allows teacher to communicate with these students from within the class and monitor progress.
Classroom Applications:
1) Obvious choice for collaborative song writing or spoken poetry.
2) Students upload and edit their songs, podcasts, poems etc, share with classmates and allow them to add spoken comments and suggestions.
